Hello, I'm opening this ticket to propose a collective reflection on what could be a new user page design.

In order to make an Iceshrimp instance visually stand out from other Misskey forks and offer an even better experience.

Current situation

The current profile page consists of a main column 734px wide containing :

  • the banner
  • profile photo
  • username
  • user id
  • … more actions btn
  • biography
  • metadata
    • date of arrival
    • birthday
    • city
    • personalized metadata fields
  • number of posts, follwings, followers
  • and finally pinned posts and posts

This often creates a lot of scrolling to get to the posts if the person has filled in their profile information.

I find this scrolling problematic.

There's a 350px-wide secondary column on the right.
It contains widgets:

  • Images (it shows 4 when folded)
  • Activity

which takes up very little height and creates a huge gap when scrolled.
I also find this problematic.

An idea for a solution

I suggest taking inspiration from the mastodon 3 desgin, so :
Move the following elements to the right-hand column:

  • biography
  • metadata
    • date of arrival
    • birthday
    • city
    • personalized metadata fields

And why not take advantage of this to make the banner take up the entire width of the two collones, to better highlight the ambience of the image?

(I also took the opportunity to reduce the width of the column on the far left to 320px.)

Generally, I do not like this proposal. I think how it is currently is (mostly) fine. And I for sure do not like the Mastodon 3 design, looks quite bad in my opinion.

This often creates a lot of scrolling to get to the posts if the person has filled in their profile information. I find this scrolling problematic.

I don't really find this to be an issue on the current default layout. But on 'Centered' and on mobile it def is an issue and can be a bit confusing because the Images and Activity panels are in the same column, however there isn't much we could do here to fix it other than just making a separate tab (next to Overview and other tabs) and putting Images and Activity there.

why? seems OK to me, and same thing happens in your proposed solution. We could, as I said, move Activity and Images to its own tab or simply get rid of them entirely.

I forgot to mention that I worked from the logged-off view of a profile.
So the default layout, not the classic "centered" one.

If not, instead of modifying one of the current layouts, how about adding a fourth "mastodon 3 style" option to the default, classic and deck views?

Many people like me have been disappointed by mastodon 4's abandonment of this type of layout, and I know admins who stay in 3.5 just for that…

Don't know how to implement that, but I'm not against adding Mastodon 3 style layout as an option.
